Survival Rates for Patients Diagnosed with Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a life threatening cancer that can be fatal when not diagnosed early enough. The earlier a patient is diagnosed, the better the prognosis. Part of the problem with not getting an early diagnosis is that often there aren’t any symptoms, and when a person does go to the doctor when symptoms start, many patients are initially misdiagnosed. Symptoms mimic many other diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart disease, making an accurate diagnosis take even longer.

In the U.S., close to 30,000 people died from mesothelioma between 1999 and 2010. Once diagnosed, 40 percent of patients will live, on average, for one more year. The second year after diagnosis, 20 percent are still alive, while the third year sees only around eight percent. This form of cancer is diagnosed around 3,000 times per year in the U.S.

Although the numbers can fluctuate slightly each year, the average age range of deaths from mesothelioma are highest with those 75 to 84 years old, with the second highest category being patients aged 65 to 74. While a person who is exposed to asbestos, the mineral that causes mesothelioma, is likely to get this type of cancer later in life, it can present itself much earlier. No age range is immune to getting mesothelioma, although the younger a person is when they get it, the higher their chances of survival. This is due in part to there being more options available, such as surgery.

Gender plays a big part in survival rates as well. Women tend to live longer after a diagnosis than men do. Some studies have suggested that the five year survival rate for women is almost 10 percent more than that of men. However, of all cases diagnosed, 80 percent are men. This is due to the occupational hazard of being exposed to asbestos and the careers these men were in: construction workers, shipyard workers, and mechanics are the most common.

In 30 percent of mesothelioma cases the patient was exposed during their time in the military, with the Navy and Marines having the highest rates. Again, this is due to their exposure while on the job which used products containing asbestos.

Although some women have gotten mesothelioma from exposure while on their jobs, many of them contracted the disease second hand. This happens from asbestos fibers being transported to the home environment from work clothes, tools, and any other items that were exposed and brought home.
