A History of Mesothelioma
While many people hadn’t heard of mesothelioma until about 30 years ago, this rare form of cancer has been occurring in individuals around the world for hundreds of years. Mesothelioma is caused by asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral, and it has been mined throughout the world. These mines have been infecting workers, their families, and those living by the mines for centuries, from Europe to Africa to Australia to the U.S. and many places in between.
To understand the history of this cancer, we have to go back to 1767 with anatomical pathologist Joseph Lieutaud of France. He was the first to note a tumor in the pleura (lining of the lungs). He performed over 3,000 autopsies and of those bodies he noted two which contained pleural tumors.

In 1843, an anatomical pathologist from Vienna University named Karl Freiherr von Rokitansky suggested that any cancer related to the pleura was secondary in nature to cancer that could be found in another location in the body. Although this was only theory and he had no real proof, many people believed him and it became common thought.
Exactly 100 years later, German scientist H.W. Wedler conducted what is thought to be the first study on the link between asbestos and mesothelioma. He studied German asbestos workers and conducted autopsies of former plant workers. Of the plant workers, 20 percent had lung cancer or mesothelioma. He concluded from the autopsies that mesothelioma took years to detect or show itself and therefore had to be from occupational exposure. Due to the political climate of WWII, most of the world ignored this important information coming out of Nazi Germany.

In 1959 a study done by researchers J.C. Wagner, Paul Marchand, and Christopher Sleggs who were studying asbestos mines in South Africa brought even more light to the link between asbestos and mesothelioma. They studied 33 people who had the disease. Of these 33 only one had no proven exposure to asbestos. The others had all been working in the mines or had lived near the mines as infants.
This information was not what the industry wanted to hear or information they wanted to get out. Pressure from the South African asbestos industry led to Wagner leaving and going to the U.K., although several studies following this one led to the exact same results, bringing about more attention to the harmful nature of asbestos.

To date, over 55 countries have banned the use of asbestos, although the U.S. isn’t one of them. The Environmental Protection Agency has banned the use of asbestos in new products, but there are still many products being made with asbestos. The U.S. even imports asbestos from other countries. Although a few politicians have presented bills trying to ban the use of asbestos in the U.S., one comprehensive bill to ban all use of it has yet to pass.
